2008 Presidency

Who do you think should be the 44th President of the United States? With elections coming up in November, it is one of the tightest races that we have witnessed thus far. Many like Hillary Clinton. Yeah I know that's funny. Some like Obama. Some like Huckabee. Some like McCain. But in the end, who would run this country the best? Who knows what to do in this situation. Who has the best qualifications?
It's easy to say that John McCain is the best candidate to become this nations 44th president. Why should Hillary even be running? I think she is running just to prove that women can do this. I would laugh in her face if she were in my presence. She is a complete JOKE. Not to be mean, but she reminds me of Martha Stewart, and there is no way I want Martha Stewart-like people running my country. What qualifications does she have? You can't just assume because her husband was the 42nd president that she is qualified to be the 44th. We can't just make First Ladies presidents! If she wasn't Bill Clinton's wife, i doubt she would have even been elected senator of NY. Maybe Laura Bush should run for the elections. I mean her husband served two terms just like Hillary's. I'm probably the exact opposite of a sexist, because I'd be the first to say that a woman has more capabilities to succeed than a man, but we need to take the world's reactions into consideration.
How would other countries react, if the greatest and most powerful nation in the world, were to be run by a woman? They would laugh at us and underestimate us. Considering the fact that in many countries women don't even have the right to vote or speak against their own government yet alone their own husbands. I believe if she were to be elected, our country could be a victim if pitiless attacks in every which way. We need to have a strong president, that would take care of our country if anything were to happen.
We need to realize that our country is vulnerable when a new president is elected into the White House. The leadership is not as strong during the first month of newly-elected officials.
Obama is a strong competitor, but I feel he is too young, and that his qualifications are minimal. He has little experience, and needs at least 10 more years before he is eligible, to run this country down to the T.
Now lets talk about John McCain. A solid candidate with political experience for 25+ years. A veteran of the Vietnam completing 20+ bombing missions. Unfortunately, he was shot down on his 23rd, and was taken prisoner. He endured severe torture, and survived it for 5 and a half years. WHAT A SOLDIER! A lot can be said about one who has gone through the pain and agony this man has. Some would consider McCain crazy, but he is just tough. A man who had to fight for his life for 5 and a half years. He is a true American. When asked if he had any grudges on the decision to be a part of the Vietnam War, he laughed and said, "Why would I?" He is one who stands by his countries decisions, and does not question them. This tells us that he would be a candidate, that was confident with each and every decision that he would make. He was part of the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. What type of person do we want running this country? A person with excellent experience, and one who is confident in their decisions. Who should be the 44th president? John McCain!

I'm not saying I'm planning to vote for Clinton, but I do think she is qualified to run, rather than a "complete joke." Education: BA Wellesley, JD, Yale; Senator for New York, 2000-2008; Staff Attorney, Children's Defense Fund; Congressional Committees: Armed Services; Environment and Public Works; Health, Education, Labor & Pensions; and numerous others; author of six books, and so on and so on. I don't see the joke here. She seems as qualified as any other candidate. Could the problem be that she is a WOMAN? I detect more than a little male chauvinism here. While I like McCain's wit, like calling the college studnet who posed a tough question--Oh what did McCain say, "Thanks for the question, you little jerk." Well that was funny, but a woman could never get away with a remark like that. And he is a war hero, no doubt. But I'd be afraid of putting him in charge of the military--he sees no problem with staying in Iraq for twenty more years, so you might want to start lining up ideas for your draft exemptions.

While I agree with you on who is the most qualified, I also agree that Clinton may not be the least qualified. I think she has been put in the spotlight as much as she has because of her husband but that's not to say she couldn't have achieved fame on her own. Obama, too, may be young but he graduated from Columbia University, went to Harvard Law School, and has been serving as an Illinois senator and in the US Senate since 1997. He's worked as an attorney and made many beneficial changes in Illinois. When it comes down to it, I really feel the US as a whole is under educated on the candidates. People are either voting for the first woman president, the first African-American to be in office, or the old guy who was held captivate that they feel bad for. I want McCain to win, but for the right reasons. On the other hand, I personally will have to do more research to make sure my ballot isn't a vote out of pity.

I don't think that women aren't qualified to run this country. I just think for the welfare of our country that a women should not be president. Its fine to be vice president, but not be in control of the whole country. The fact of the matter is that most of the powerful and potentially dangerous countries in the world are countries who have less respect for women. That could be a potential threat. Education is there for all candidates. We can't single one out because of different colleges attended. That's not the way to go about it. Also, it has already been stated, that McCain does not believe in a draft, and does not plan to initiate one. Of course I believe in the war in Iraq. It is necessary. We need to open our eyes, and realize we do not need another Clinton in the house. This isn't male chauvinism, at all. I never said she isn't qualified because of her gender. So don't make that assumption. Is she Educated? YES. Has she been around politics? Yes she has. Has she for as long as McCain? NO. I want a someone (notice i didn't say man) affiliated with politics for over 20 years. Why? Because experience is what will keep this country strong.

I reread your first post and see that you admitted women have more capabilities to succeed than men. I missed that because of all the mud-slinging about Martha Stewart. Clinton has nothing in common with Martha except that they are both rich blonde women of a certain age. I wonder what you mean about the superior capablilities--what might be a woman's advantage over a man's as president? I think women listen more and that would be a plus. I'm not as worried as you are about the rest of the world thinking we are weak. If anything, it would show we stand by our talk about equality. Some embattled countries have had women at the helm, like Golda Meir, who was prime minister of Israel in the 1970's. If there ever was a country that needed a strong leader, it's Israel.

While reading your post on this very controversial election, I couldn't help thinking about England. They had very strong leadership under Thatcher. I believe that having a woman wouldn't be a deterrent, but things would be blamed on her "because she's a woman." We were having a conversation in my first semester rhetoric about this. No one blamed Bush on certain decisions he made "because he's a man." I agree with you that women are better listeners etc. She obviously is tough enough to handle it, and I believe that she would have run regardless of the fact that her husband was president. She does have plenty of experience, whereas Obama does not have as much. I see why you like McCain; he obviously has plenty of experience, but I think that he will have a harder time connecting to a middle-to-younger age group. I also think that he plays the "captive of war" card too much and. Honestly, he's kind of a jerk. I like cec's last sentence of her first comment up top "Start lining up ideas for you draft exemptions" haha. Yeah, I'm a liberal. I think Clinton will do just fine in office.

well sorority girl, i see your point. You're a liberal. Nothing wrong with that and you have different beliefs. Well We had Mr. John Kerry running last time. Wow what a joke he was. A purple heart because he shot himself. Thats a winner. You be a P.O.W. of Vietnam gorillas and see if you aren't praised the rest of your life for it. Clinton is a joke, and you can't just assume she would have won the senator job of NY if she had no affiliation to Bill. She would have been a nobody. You think arnold would have won California governor spot, if he wasn't the TERMINATOR? HAHA NO! Open your eyes and smell the coffee. p.s. you are a girl the draft does not pertain to you. Let us guys worry about that.

I think it’s interesting how you focus on the experience and ethnicity/gender of the candidates but don't analyze their platform and what each entails. These preconceived ideas are unfortunately, almost always what determines the outcome of the election. I disagree with your statement on other countries viewing America as weak with a woman in office. America is already viewed by much of the world as close-minded, obnoxious, and dangerous. Having a woman in office would most likely generate more respect from developed countries. Having military bases across the world brings many young ignorant marines in contact with a culture that they show no respect for. They're all under the impression that they are there protecting them so that the host country should respect them, but in reality, most citizens of each country don't even want them there. The country's government however, does want this, to ensure a connection with the world's strongest military. Lastly, we are perceived as a threat with the amount of money we invest into the military. Which I concluded is the root of our problem. We are the only developed country that spends more than half its budget on the military. . I understand your respect for what McCain has endured, but what came out of that? Respect? America's been overly concerned about our innate respect of our protection of rights, but its time to turn our respect onto the environment and the common needs of the individual within OUR country.

You're coming at it all wrong man. The people of these countries we go over the to help are split. Not all of the people of these countries dont want us there. Look at Afghanistan...because of us, women can now vote their. Why do you think Marines are ignorant? they don't go there to get respect, they go there because they believe in our president like every other American should. Marines are willing to die for what they THINK is right. Thats why they are there. We can't just focus on the environment because honestly man the whole world as one has to care about the enviornment. One nation can offset all hopes to take care of the environment. Therefore, we have to focus on something else. Women shouldn't be the president of this country. Don't think that will help our image. It definately won't man. Here is what you MUST understand. People hate us because they want to be US. They want to be Americans. They want to feel protected and have what we have. So what do jealous people do when they can't have what one has? They hate and they hate even more. The individual in this country is protected, and all presidents do what they can to take care of everyone. Americans are united as one and need to be. No matter who the president is, we must support him instead of having obnoxious liberals crying. I see where you are coming from though. I wish the environment was taken better care of, but that is something the entire world must do. Which in the end has nothing to do with the election of the next president. Thanks for the comment though.

So we went to Iraq because it was split? I thought it was for weapons of mass destruction. But no, we killed innocent civilians off of a hunch. Would you now say that the world was jealous of our power, or hated us for our abuse of it? If america truly helped countries that were split, then we would forget iraq and go to Darfur to stop the genocide there. About my marine comment, I grew up on a military base in Japan and have been on bases throughout the pacific and europe, and the majority of the marines I encountered didn't want to be where they were. Most of them had no other way to make it. They are not allowed to voice any negative opinion of the president's orders or they may face jail time. America is too reliant on their current power to make any environmental change, and the current administration consists of t some of the wealthiest people in america who's stock is based around our current economy. If we cut it back, they would lose money, but it would create millions of jobs in a completely new market. The conservatives are too reliant on the old ways. In order to grow we must change. Which is why the environment is one of the bigger factors in the upcoming election. If we are the most powerful country, then it is up to us to trigger this change. Didn't you watch the debates? This was one of the bigger issues discussed by all the candidates. Even though I oppose all of your arguments, I can see where your coming from. All major powers in the world seek to protect their power by increasing it and going by their strengths. America is currently doing this, rather than learning from history, that power is short-lived.
